Static avalanches and Giant stress fluctuations in Silos

چکیده
We propose a simple model for arch formation in silos. We show that small pertubations (such as the thermal expansion of the beads) may lead to giant stress fluctuations on the bottom plate of the silo. The relative amplitude ∆ of these fluctuations are found to be power-law distributed, as ∆−τ , τ ≃ 1.0. These fluctuations are related to large scale ‘static avalanches’, which correspond to long-range redistributions of stress paths within the silo. Typeset using REVTEX

When some granular material contained into a silo is pushed upwards with a piston, an irregular stick-slip motion of the system of grains is observed. We show how one can adapt the 'Scalar Arching Model' (sam) – proposed as a model for giant stress fluctuations in silos – in order to describe this stick-slip phenomenon. As a function of the sensitivity of the system to mechanical noise, the sys...

Numerical modeling of correlated single-electron tunneling in uniform two-dimensional arrays of small conducting islands separated by tunnel junctions shows the possibility of soliton-antisoliton avalanches. Though the time duration of any avalanche and the total charge, DQ5ne , transferred across the array during the avalanche are always finite in arrays with length N larger than certain criti...
متن کاملSEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF SILOS WITH DIFFERENT HEIGHT TO DIAMETER RATIOS CONSIDERING GRANULAR MATERIAL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION
Silos are structures that are used for storing different types of granular material. Dynamic behavior of silos under seismic loads is very complex. In this paper seismic behavior of steel silos with different height to diameter ratios is investigated by considering granular material-structure interaction using ABAQUS finite element package. Silo wall is modeled by shell elements and its behavio...
متن کاملAvalanches, precursors, and finite-size fluctuations in a mesoscopic model of amorphous plasticity.
We discuss avalanche and finite-size fluctuations in a mesoscopic model to describe the shear plasticity of amorphous materials. Plastic deformation is assumed to occur through series of local reorganizations. Yield stress criteria are random while each plastic slip event induces a quadrupolar long-range elastic stress redistribution. The model is discretized on a regular square lattice. Shear ...
متن کاملFluctuation phenomena in crystal plasticity - a continuum model
On microscopic and mesoscopic scales, plastic flow of crystals is characterized by large intrinsic fluctuations. Deformation by crystallographic slip occurs in a sequence of intermittent bursts (’slip avalanches’) with power-law size distribution. In the spatial domain, these avalanches produce characteristic deformation patterns in the form of slip lines and slip bands which exhibit longrange ...
